Sarah Gibson

Sarah Gibson is the Director of the School of Communication and Faculty Fellow for AI (“artificial intelligence”) at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. She is an educator, podcaster, new media storyteller, and First Amendment scholar with over 17 years of experience as a university professor. She is also the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Human-Centered AI: Creativity and Practice. Gibson holds a B.S. in Electronic Media from Abilene Christian University and an M.F.A. in Radio, Television, and Film from the University of North Texas.

Growing up in a house surrounded by media and technology, Gibson learned to code websites for the early internet—before Yahoo! or Google—an experience that sparked her passion for technology and innovation. Today, she is the Executive Producer of the AI and the Kid podcast, which is hosted and co-created by her 9-year-old daughter. She remains a passionate advocate for the transformative power of artificial intelligence, believing in a human-centered approach that embraces technology and promotes deep human connection.

Her career spans award-winning filmmaking and innovative academic leadership. Among her many accomplishments, Gibson has contributed to several award-winning films and new media projects—including an interactive documentary that earned the Broadcast Education Association’s Best of Festival King Foundation Award in 2012. Under her guidance, students have produced nationally recognized work, including a documentary that received a National Murrow Award. One current student is even developing custom bots to assist neurodivergent individuals in various tasks.

Her leadership extends beyond the classroom. As department chair, she has led curriculum redesigns, overseen studio renovations, and coordinated cross-functional teams. She has led multiple branding efforts, including a rebrand of student media and conference themes. She has also helped develop innovative general education curriculum and guided the School of Communication toward a forward-thinking certificate model, allowing students to customize their educational paths. In her current roles, she continues to balance tradition with innovation, drawing on her personal mission to “embrace the tension of the in-betweens and navigate a road of change, offering discernment and invention, tradition and innovation, strategic thinking and decisive action to bring about individual and collective flourishing.”

A mother of two, Gibson credits her family life for continually shaping her perspective on storytelling and technology. Her Working Genius Profile highlights strengths in Discernment and Invention, and her CliftonStrengths include Restorative, Strategic, Achiever, Focus, and Individualization. These qualities guide her commitment to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring the next generation of storytellers and innovators.
